Reed McGowan was born and raised in New Orleans, where he studied music theory at an early age and was trained for the opera, musical theatre, and choreographic design. His scholastic achievements resulted in a Bachelors degree in Radio, which introduced him to the world of DJ culture.
Reed started DJ-ing in 1985 at the world-famous Bourbon Pub & Parade, and became one of the first DJ/VJs to work in that premier video nightclub until 1991. Reed then moved to New Haven, Connecticut, where he continued to work as a DJ at various local clubs while traveling back and forth to New York City to study such influential talents as Junior Vasquez, Frankie Knuckles, David Morales, and Danny Tenaglia. Reed's nightlife inspirations were the Sound Factory, Tunnel, Limelight, and other legendary venues.
In 1996, Reed established New York City as his permanent home and since
then has enjoyed spinning in the company of many other DJ masters. During
his 20-plus years of spinning, Reed has graced the decks at such NYC nightlife
institutions as Splash, Crobar, Eagle, Palladium, Roseland, Webster Hall,
Mr. Black, Lure, Tunnel, Monster and Hammerstein Ballroom. Reed also gained
a reputation as an accomplished Video Editor, with his works being seen
in clubs all over the world. This passion for production has led him to
his own original Billboard charting productions and remixes.
His production work is a testament to his ability, not only as DJ/Producer, but also as a songwriter. In the recent past, Reed has been honored with two Billboard Magazine Songwriting awards. Recently, Reed has been moving his career to the next level with his group Empulse, a collaborative project incorporating the talents of his many DJ peers, which showcases his performance skills as well.
Reed maintains regular appearances in New York City and the US for major events, as well as abroad. Reed’s style is an eclectic blend of mixed genres that include: House, Progressive, Electronic, Tribal, Industrial, Minimal, Circuit, Soul, Top 40, Disco/Dance Classics and many others.
